30 HP SPPS Written-Pole Motor Locked Rotor Test
Today at our production facility we tested the locked rotor torque a new 30 HP Written Pole motor. The Locked Rotor Torque or Starting Torque is the torque the electrical motor develops when its starts at rest or zero speed.
A high Starting Torque is more important for application or machines hard to start such as positive displacement pumps.
Our motor out performed our expectations with 110 ft/lbs of torque at 0 rpm or 125% of full rated HP. Needless to say, we had a good day at the office

SPPS President, Drew Abbott to speak at Rural Electric Resource Council’s Annual Conference
Cincinnati, OH—March 24, 2014—Single Phase Power Solutions, LLC’s (SPPS) President, Drew Abbott has been invited to speak at the annual conference of the Rural Electric Resource Council’s Annual Conference about the large horse power single-phase “Written-Pole” electric motors SPPS produces and supports. SPPS “Written-Pole” motors are the worlds only large-horsepower single-phase motor, available up to 100 hp. Their low starting current (soft start), energy efficiency and proven reliability make them a preferred choice over VFD and phase converters in many applications. This technology allows remote users to operate on available single-phase distribution lines, eliminating the high cost of running three-phase supply or the high operating costs associated with combustion engines.
The Rural Electric Resource Council, RERC, is a national association of electric companies, cooperatives, public power districts and allied groups. The RERC supports its membership as a “national center of rural electric topics” including white papers on Written-Pole® motors. RERC knowledge base includes case studies of this technology which can be of great value to rural electric suppliers trying to meet their customers needs without the large capital investments associated with expanding three-phase distribution. The annual conference will be held in St. Claire, Missouri May, 28 and 29th. Information about the conference is available at: http://www.rerc.org/
Single Phase Power Solutions Reintroduces Unique Motor to Market
CINCINNATI, OH—October 18, 2013—Cincinnati-based Single Phase Power Solutions, LLC (SPPS) has signed an agreement with Precise Power Corporation of Bradenton, Florida to manufacture and sell 30 to 100 horsepower Written-Pole® single-phase motors. SPPS will reintroduce these motors, which are not phase converters but true single-phase motors—the only large-horsepower single-phase motors in existence. SPPS is expanding its manufacturing capability with a new plant, opening early 2014, in Sarasota, Florida.
The agreement allows SPPS to use John F. Roesel, Jr. and Ronnie Barber’s award-winning proprietary Written-Pole® technology. This technology was first applied to the manufacture of large horsepower single-phase motors in the mid-1990s; many of the motors produced in this period are still in use, a testimony to the motors’ reliability.
Three-phase electric power in rural locations is limited. Traditionally, applications in these locations have relied on reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE), as conventional single-phase motors do not exceed 12 horsepower. New RICE emissions regulations will drive up the cost of internal combustion engines, while the cost of bringing three-phase lines to rural applications can cost $30,000 to $100,000 per mile. A case study of an irrigation application showed 70% cost savings in using a large horsepower single-phase motor instead of a propane-fueled engine.
“Our launch market is Dumas, Texas, and the nine counties surrounding Dumas,” reports Greg York, SPPS Vice President of Operations. “There are three million acres being farmed with irrigation and roughly 9,000 motors or pumps in the launch region…[but] irrigation farming is just one of the applications we’ve identified to grow our business. Our motor provides similar benefits anywhere fossil fuel engines are being used.”
Founded by Drew Abbott and Greg York, Single Phase Power Solutions has offices in Cincinnati, Dumas, TX and a new production facility in Sarasota. Written-Pole® single-phase motors will be demonstrated at select agriculture and technology events in the coming months.
The World’s First 100 HP Single-Phase Electric Motor
Although it has been nearly 10 years since the successful testing of the world’s first commercially available 100 horsepower single-phase electric motor, SPPS is continuing to expand the awareness and consumer base of this ground-breaking design. Designed for operation on single-phase utility distribution systems, the single-phase motor is the behemoth of the company’s line of large-horsepower single-phase motors, available in sizes ranging from 15 to 100 hp. These large horsepower single-phase motors benefit from several important enhancements made possible through the application of Written-Pole® Technology, a proprietary motor and generator technology developed by John F. Roesel Jr. and Ronnie Barber. The low starting current requirements and high operating efficiency made possible by this technology have enabled designers to dramatically increase the available horsepower that single-phase motors can produce while operating on standard single-phase utility distribution systems.
The starting demand of a Written-Pole® single-phase motor is generally about 25 to 30 percent of the starting demand of an equivalent single or three-phase induction motor, dramatically reducing electrical demand and annoying voltage flicker on utility distributions systems. The 100 hp single-phase motor is the standard in starting performance with a locked-rotor current of 1.3 times the motor’s full-load current while still producing 65 percent of the motor’s rated full-load torque. The peak starting current of 1.50 times the rated full-load current generates 125 percent of the motor’s rated full-load torque providing sufficient torque to start most loads.
Written-Pole® single-phase electric motors are the most energy efficient single-phase motors available in the market, with operating efficiencies comparable to those of energy-efficient three phase induction motors mandated under Canadian and American energy-efficiency regulations. While energy efficiency regulations for large horsepower single-phase motors do not presently exist in either Canada or the United States, Written-Pole® single-phase motors clearly demonstrate the potential for future energy savings.
Testing performed at Hydro Quebec laboratory an independent laboratory in Shawinigan, Quebec, considered to be one of the most advanced motor test laboratories in North America, confirmed the full-load operating efficiency of the 100 hp single-phase motor to be greater than 95.0 percent, comparable to high efficiency three-phase induction motors offered by other manufacturers. This impressive achievement provides for substantial operating savings over comparable diesel or electric options that can dramatically improve the cost-effectiveness of many agricultural and municipal applications.
Applications ranging from single motor installations of 15 horsepower to multiple motor installations totaling clearly demonstrated the benefits available from the use of Written-Pole® single-phase motors. End-users seeking to expand or modernize applications with larger horsepower requirements such as irrigation pumping systems, grain drying facilities and gas compression equipment now have an electric option that will enable them to benefit from the low energy costs, reduced labor requirements and convenience of electric power. The replacement of diesel engines in many larger horsepower applications will substantially reduce operating costs as diesel fuel costs continue to rise, while protecting the environment through reductions in the production of greenhouse gases and soil/water contamination from fuel spills.
